    • Large oscillation amplitude will lead to nonlinearity of the cantilever motion and to frequency doubling. If this is the case, interpretation of data using linear response theory is not valid any more. We have not observed this effect in our experiments, which seems reasonable since the smallest tip-sample distance (about 3 nm) is large compared to the maximum oscillation amplitude (about 0.2 nm).
