    • ETA has been one of the more enduring terrorist organisations in postwar Europe. Taking its name from Euskadi Ata Askatasuna (Basque fatherland and freedom) the group was formed in the 1950s as a reaction to the heavy-handed repression of the Franco regime in the Basque country. By the 1960s it was a terror group which had begun to target members of the security forces. It is still a potent threat to the security of democratic governments today.
