1. Galicia occupies the north-west corner of Spain (bordering northern Portugal), Catalonia lies in the north-eastern corner of Spain and the Basque country the north of Spain.
2. ETA has been one of the more enduring terrorist organisations in postwar Europe. Taking its name from Euskadi Ata Askatasuna (Basque fatherland and freedom) the group was formed in the 1950s as a reaction to the heavy-handed repression of the Franco regime in the Basque country. By the 1960s it was a terror group which had begun to target members of the security forces. It is still a potent threat to the security of democratic governments today.

4. The drafting of the constitution was carried out in secret by the 'ponencia' a small committee composed of members from the two largest parties (socialist PSOE, and the centre-democrat UCD) and Catalan nationalist party. At the time (1977) the UCD was the governing party.

Almeria rejected the creation of Andalucia's autonomous community (the only province to do so) and stopped the Andalucian process of Article 151 despite Andalucia expressing more voting support than Galicia, the Basque country and Catalonia.
