Implications for the catalytic mechanism of the vanadium-containing enzyme chloroperoxidase from the fungus Curvularia inaequalis by X-ray structures of the native and peroxide form
-
Messerschmidt A, Prade L, Wever R: Implications for the catalytic mechanism of the vanadium-containing enzyme chloroperoxidase from the fungus Curvularia inaequalis by X-ray structures of the native and peroxide form. Biol Chem 1997, 378:309-15. Contains the X-ray structure of V-CIPO in its native and peroxide-coordinated forms, showing the remarkably simple vanadate and peroxovanadium(V) sites. The native form shows a vanadate-like center coordinated to only one histidine ligand in a trigonal bipyramidal geometry. Multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions between the vanadate oxygen atoms and amino acid side chains or mainchain amide protons stabilize the negative charge on the 'vanadate' center.

Inactivation of vanadium bromoperoxidase: Formation of 2-oxohistidine
-
Meister Winter GE, Butler A: Inactivation of vanadium bromoperoxidase: formation of 2-oxohistidine. Biochemistry 1996, 35:11805-11811. This paper shows that 2-oxohistidine is formed during the turnover inactivation of V-BrPO which occurs at pH 4-5. The report is only the second example of 2-oxohistidine formation in a native enzyme. Electrochemical detection on HPLC is required to detect 2-oxohistidine; thus its occurrence in proteins should be considered.
