Note that the main contribution to the indicatrix, or refractive index tensor, is due to the polarizability of the molecules. Contributions from the intermolecular order are expected to be small and are thus neglected in this approach. We have also compared BAAS tilt angle measurements on arachidic and stearic acid with GIXD results. The comparison yielded good agreement using the same values for the dielectric constants. This indicates that contributions of the head groups to ε may be neglected (Ref. 28).
