    • We are able to assign the positions of the step edges from the tunneling contours in the images because topographic features due to molecules above and below the step edge can extend down to the substrate. In particular, imperfections in the 2D molecular solid along the step allow us glimpses of the uncovered terraces adjacent to occupied adsorption sites.
