1. 1 The hostage crisis was caused by a revolutionary militant group known as Tupac Amaru ("Royal Serpent"). Disguised as waiters and caterers, the rebels gained entry to a party commemorating the birthday of Japanese Emperor Akihito and took control of the building and the party guests. Initially, the rebels issued several demands, including the release of 450 comrades being held in various jails and safe passage to the Amazon jungle. Four months later, on April 22, 1997, without having given in to any of the rebels' demands, a squad of Peruvian special forces rescued the 73 hostages from the Embassy, killing all 14 of the Tupac Amam rebels during the raid. One hostage, a judge, died of a heart attack during the rescue effort.
