The SCARECROW gene regulates an asymmetric cell division that is essential for generating the radial organization of the Arabidopsis root
-
Dilaurenzio L, Wysockadiller J, Malamy JE, Pysh L, Helariutta Y, Freshour G, Hahn MG, Feldmann KA, Benfey PN: The SCARECROW gene regulates an asymmetric cell division that is essential for generating the radial organization of the Arabidopsis root Cell 1996, 86:423-433. In this paper, it is demonstrated that the single cell layer in roots of scr mutants has properties of both cortical parenchyma and endodermis. Cloning of the SCR gene reveals several amino acid sequence motifs that suggest its product functions as a transcription factor. Expression analysis reveals that the gene is transcribed in the ground tissue initials and in the mature endodermis.

Arabidopsis AUX1 gene: A permease-like regulator of root gravitropism
-
Bennett MJ, Marchant A, Green HG, May ST, Ward SP, Millner PA, Walker AR, Schulz B, Feldmann KA: Arabidopsis AUX1 gene: a permease-like regulator of root gravitropism. Science 1996, 273:948-950. Plants with mutations in the AUX1 gene display auxin-resistant root growth and defective gravitropism. The paper describes the cloning of the AUX1 gene and its expression pattern in the root tip. Analysis of the polypeptide sequence derived from AUX1 reveals similarity to amino acid permeases, which could suggest that the protein transports indole-3-acetic acid.

Studies on the role of the Arabidopsis gene MONOPTEROS in vascular development and plant cell axialization
-
Przemeck GKH, Mattsson J, Hardtke CS, Sung ZR, Berleth T: Studies on the role of the Arabidopsis gene MONOPTEROS in vascular development and plant cell axialization. Planta 1996, 200:229-237. The authors describe the postembryonic phenotype of mp mutants, and demonstrate that vascular cells are improperly connected in all organs, and that polar auxin transport is reduced in inflorescence axes. The mutant phenotype suggests that the MP gene is required for cell axialization and the formation of continuous cell files.
