In this paper, it is demonstrated that the single cell layer in roots of scr mutants has properties of both cortical parenchyma and endodermis. Cloning of the SCR gene reveals several amino acid sequence motifs that suggest its product functions as a transcription factor. Expression analysis reveals that the gene is transcribed in the ground tissue initials and in the mature endodermis.

Science 1996, 273:948-950. Plants with mutations in the AUX1 gene display auxin-resistant root growth and defective gravitropism. The paper describes the cloning of the AUX1 gene and its expression pattern in the root tip. Analysis of the polypeptide sequence derived from AUX1 reveals similarity to amino acid permeases, which could suggest that the protein transports indole-3-acetic acid.

The authors describe the postembryonic phenotype of mp mutants, and demonstrate that vascular cells are improperly connected in all organs, and that polar auxin transport is reduced in inflorescence axes. The mutant phenotype suggests that the MP gene is required for cell axialization and the formation of continuous cell files.
