    • Depressive syndromes and symptoms in subjects with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection
    • Maj M. Depressive syndromes and symptoms in subjects with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Br J Psychiatry 1996; 168 (Suppl 30):117-122. This paper summarizes the results of the World Health Organization Neuropsychiatric AIDS Study concerning the prevalence of depressive syndromes and symptoms in individuals with HIV infection. In the Bangkok centre, the prevalence of current major depression was significantly higher among symptomatic HIV-seropositive individuals than in HIV-seronegative control individuals. The mean global score on the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale was significantly higher in symptomatic HIV-seropositive individuals than in HIV-seronegative control individuals in all centres.

This is a follow-up of 911 HIV-seropositive men over the 5 years before and the 2 years after the diagnosis of AIDS. Beginning 12 18 months before AIDS diagnosis, there was a significant increase in all measures of depression, including the prevalence of syndromal depression, which reached a plateau within 6 months before AIDS developed.

Prevalence and predictors of depressive, anxiety and substance use disorders in HIV-infected and uninfected men: a longitudinal evaluation. Psychol Med 1997; 27:395-409. This is a 1-year follow-up of 113 HIV-seropositive men and 57 HIV-seronegative control individuals. The prevalence of major depression during the follow-up period was significantly higher in the former group. Younger age, history of major depression and low social support predicted the occurrence of depressive episodes in HIV-seropositive individuals.

Edited by Onken LS, Blaine JD, Genser S, MacNeil Horton A Jr. Rockville, MD: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; 1997:130-155. This paper reports on a sample of 502 African-American men from Los Angeles. The prevalence of major depression was significantly higher among both symptomatic and asymptomatic HIV-seropositive individuals than in HIV-seronegative control individuals. Sexual orientation and duration of cocaine use were the best predictors of the presence of depression.
