The effectiveness of inpatient and outpatient treatment for alcohol abuse: The need to focus on mediators and moderators of setting effects
-
Finney JW, Hahn AC, Moos RH. The effectiveness of inpatient and outpatient treatment for alcohol abuse: the need to focus on mediators and moderators of setting effects. Addiction 1996: 91:1773-1796. The authors provide an updated review of the relative effectiveness of inpatient and outpatient settings for treating alcohol abuse. Based on their sophisticated analysis of the data, they conclude that under some circumstances an inpatient treatment setting is more effective than an outpatient setting. Thus, the important question becomes under what set of circumstances will what variables in the inpatient setting mediate enhanced effectiveness?
