J Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery 1997, 113:37-49 This is the largest series of metastasectomies published in the literature, and it is a landmark study. The outcomes, risks, approaches, as well as the substratification of histologies and prognostic factors make it one of the most important articles in the field.
2. van Geel AN, Pastorino U, Jauch KW, Judson IR, van Coevorden F, Buesa J, Nielsen O, Boudinet A, Tursz T, Schmitz P: Surgical treatment of lung metastses: the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer-soft tissue and bone sarcoma study of 255 patients. Cancer 1996, 77:675-682. A cooperative study that documents the results for pulmonary metastasectomy in a uniform histology, ie, sarcoma. The analysis of the data is similar to that found in Pastorino et at. [1] and thus makes these papers complementary.

McCormack PM, Bains MS, Begg C, Burt ME, Downey RJ, Panicek DM, Rusch VW, Zakowski M, Ginsburg RJ: The role of video-assisted thoracic surgery in the treatment of pulmonary metastases: results of a prospective trial. Ann Thorac Surg 1996, 62:213-217. This controversial study is the only one that truly analyzes and compares the efficacy of VATS metastasectomy to standard thoracotomy. The discussion by VATS proponents is especially entertaining.

In Regional Therapy of Advanced Cancer, Edited by Lotze MT, Rubin J. Philadelphia: Lippincott-Raven; 1997:51-63. A general review of the indications for VATS. Much of the chapter concentrates on the philosophical approach to the patient with pulmonary metastases, and thus attempts to justify an exclusive VATS approach for these patients. A very good reference source by the leaders in thoracic endoscopie surgery.

This article presents a unique series that is fairly realistic in its defined uses for VATS in patients with metastases.

10. Johnstone PAS, Rohde DC, Swartz SE, Fetter JE, Wexner SD: Port site recurrences after laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures in malignancy. J Clin Oncol 1996, 14:1950-1956. This is a unique study that is a good summation of the difficult problem of video-assisted surgery, with data not only in the thoracic situation, but also for patients having abdominal minimally invasive surgery.

12. Abolhoda A, Brooks A, Nawata S, Kaneda Y, Cheng H, Burt ME: Isolated lung perfusion with doxorubicin prolongs survival in a rodent model of pulmonary metastases. Ann Thorac Surg 1997, 64:181-185. This article provides the most recent data from the Sloan-Kettering laboratory, which documents that isolated lung perfusion can prolong survival in a model of unilateral pulmonary metastases.
13. Putnam JB, Madden T, Tran HT, Benjamin RS: Isolated single lung perfusion (ISLP) with adriamycin for unresectable sarcomatous metastases [abstract]. Proc Am Soc Clin Oncol 1997, 16:500a. Despite the fact that this series represents preliminary data, it is the largest to date that performs adriamycin lung perfusion based on the technique described by Burt.

15. Pass HI, Mew DJY, Kranda K, Temeck B, Donington J, Rosenberg SA: Isolated lung perfusion with tumor necrosis factor for pulmonary metastases. Ann Thorac Surg 1996, 61:1609-1617. This is the largest series of isolated lung perfusions published in the literature. The technique is standard cardiopulmonary bypass and involves the use of two cytokines: 1) tumor necrosis factor and 2) interferon, as well as hyperthermia. It documents response rates, complications, and technical details.
