Simon GE, VonKorff M. Prevalence, burden, and treatment of insomnia in • primary care. Am J Psychiatry 1997; 154:1417-1423. This primary health care study in almost 2000 individuals looked at the incidence of insomnia and related complaints. The incidence of insomnia according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, third edition (revised), critieria was 10%, associated with significantly greater general health problems.

Complex interaction of the sleep-wake cycle and circadian phase modulates mood in healthy subjects

Boivin D, Czeisler CA, Dijk DJ, Duffy JF, Folkard S, Minors DS, et al. •• Complex interaction of the sleep-wake cycle and circadian phase modulates mood in healthy subjects. Arch Gen Psychiatry 1997; 54:145-152. This study investigated inter-relationships between circadian phase, sleep-wake rhythms and mood in healthy individuals in a isolation unit with the forced desynchronization protocol. Mood seemed to be dependent on a complex relationship between prior wakefulness and circadian phase.
