    • L-Azetidine-2-carboxylic acid (L-A-2-C), like all the natural amino acids except cysteine, possesses the S configuration at C-2 and is the only stereoisomer degraded by the organisms characterized here. A manuscript detailing this stereoselectivity as well as other stereochemical aspects of the mechanism of the unusual hydrolytic ring opening is in preparation.

    • 9 concerning the characterization of the organism utilized in their study was that "the cells possess mixed shoulder and peritrichous flagella." The organism(s) was actually characterized by Dr. A. J. Holding in a personal communication to these authors. One of our organisms (E. agglomerans) does possess flagella, although only polar.
