Prospective cohort study of factors influencing the relative weights of the placenta and the newborn infant
-
Williams LA, Evans SF, Newnham JP. Prospective cohort study of factors • influencing the relative weights of the placenta and the newborn infant. BMJ 1997; 314:1864-1868. Although there remains little doubt that low birthweight is associated with cardiovascular disease in adult life, causation has yet to be proved. This study was based on data collected prospectively from 2507 pregnancies in an ongoing cohort study in Western Australia, and determined the demographic, environmental and medical factors that influence the relative weights of the placenta and newborn infant. It was concluded that this ratio may be acting as a surrogate for other factors which are already known to influence health and may act either before or after birth.

Is blood pressure inversely related to birth weight? The strength of evidence from a systematic review of the literature
-
Law CM, Shiell AW. Is blood pressure inversely related to birth weight? • The strength of evidence from a systematic review of the literature. J Hypertens 1996; 14:935-941. This timely article is a systematic review of all papers addressing the relationship between birthweight and blood pressure in humans. The subjects in these articles include more than 66 000 individuals aged 0-71 years and confirm a negative relationship between blood pressure and birthweight in both children and adults.

Placental weight, birth measurements, and blood pressure at age 8 years

Moore VM, Miller AG, Boulton TJC, Cockington RA, Craig IH, Magarey • AM, Robinson JS. Placental weight, birth measurements, and blood pressure at age 8 years. Arch Dis Child 1996; 74:538-541. This retrospective study was based on a cohort of children born at term in 1975-1976 and examined at 8 years of age. It was observed that blood pressure was inversely related to birthweight and, simultaneously, positively associated with placental weight. These data build on evidence from previous animal-based and clinical studies linking fetal growth and hypertension in adult life.

Long-term effects of prenatal stress and handling on metabolic parameters: Relationship to corticosterone secretion response
-
Vallee M, Mayo W, Maccari S, Le Moal M, Simon H. Long-term effects of • prenatal stress and handling on metabolic parameters: relationship to corticosterone secretion response. Brain Res 1996; 712:287-292. This study of adult rats investigated the long-term effects of prenatal and postnatal manipulations and their effects on glucocorticoid secretion. The results add to the evidence that the prenatal and postnatal environments exert long-term effects on the stress-response of the HPA axis.

Repetitive prenatal glucocorticoids improve lung function and decrease growth in preterm lambs
-
Ikegami M, Jobe AH, Newnham J, Polk DH, Willet KE, Sly P. Repetitive • prenatal glucocorticoids improve lung function and decrease growth in preterm lambs. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 1997; 156:178-184. This study was performed to evaluate the effects in sheep of the repeated maternal administration of corticosteroids for the purpose of enhancing lung maturation before preterm birth. Repeated doses of corticosteroids resulted in progressive improvements in postnatal lung function, but also caused fetal growth restriction. Exposure of the fetus to excessive cortisol and other stress hormones is one of the possible mechanisms by which low birthweight is associated with postnatal hypertension, obesity and diabetes.

Fetal brain sparing is associated with accelerated shortening of visual evoked potential latencies dunng early infancy
-
Scherjon SA, Oosting H, Ongerboer de Visser BW, de Wilde T, • Zondervan HA, Kok JH. Fetal brain sparing is associated with accelerated shortening of visual evoked potential latencies dunng early infancy. Am J Obstet Gynecol 1996; 175:1569-1575. This study was designed to assess the effect that fetal growth restriction exerts on myelination of the developing brain. During infancy, myelination can be assessed by the measurement of visual evoked potential latencies. Infants who had been shown in fetal life to have asymmetric growth restriction were observed at 6 months age to have accelerated neurophysiological maturation. Ongoing study of these children is required to determine the significance of this finding.

This study from the MRC Environmental Epidemiology Unit in Southampton, UK, involved the measurement of intelligence, and the decline in intelligence which occurs with age, in 1576 men and women born between 1929 and 1943.
