    • Christmas N, Smiddy WE: Vitrectomy and systemic fluconazole for treatment of endogenous fungal endophthalmitis. Ophthalmic Surg Lasers 1996, 27:1012-1018. This series of six eyes in five patients is important for establishing the role of treatment without intravitreal amphotericin. It emphasizes the good results that can be obtained with only vitrectomy and follow-up of oral fluconazole. Excellent visual acuity was obtained in all patients except one, in which the chorioretinitis emanated from the center of the fovea. This paper also establishes that this entity may occur in patients who are not immunocompromised but who have had recent surgery.

This article specifically addresses the fact that vitrectomy for epiretinal membrane after the treatment of endogenous fungal endophthalmitis does lead to some improvement in vision. The experience is in only three cases but emphasizes the importance of not forgetting this therapeutic option after the treatment of the acute infection. Actually, much of this can be treated concomitantly with the vitrectomy for treatment of the acute infection.
