    • Developmental changes in laryngeal and respiratory function with variations in sound pressure level
    • Stathopoulos ET, Sapienza CM: Developmental changes in laryngeal and respiratory function with variations in sound pressure level. J Speech Hear Res 1997, 40:594-614. This paper discusses the results of a developmental study of the speech production system in female and male children 4 to 14 years of age. This study is one of the primary cross-sectional examinations of children's speech to include an appreciable number of participants in each group. The data from the children are compared to those from young adults. The design of the study incorporated, simultaneously, measures of laryngeal and respiratory function, including aerodynamic, acoustic and respiratory kinematic measures. The participants manipulated the sound pressure level of their voices so that the aeromechanical coordinative mechanisms of the laryngeal and respiratory systems could be studied. This elucidated a developmental trend. The data emphasized that the laryngeal and respiratory behavior of children is not easily predicted from an adult model. Children younger than 14 years of age showed function distinct from that of adult men. Of note, their laryngeal function during speech was similar to that of adult women; this finding indicates a link between laryngeal function and anatomic size. The authors also showed distinctions between the respiratory function of children and adults during speech. They noted that examination of respiratory function in children during speech should consider differences not only in lung and thorax size but also in lung recoil and airway resistance. The tabular database at the end of the article can be used to document age and sex differences in laryngeal and respiratory function during speech.
