Patterns of prolapse in women with symptoms of pelvic floor weakness: Assessment with MR imaging
-
Healy JC, Halligan S, Reznek RH, Watson S, Phillips RKS, Armstrong P. Patterns of prolapse in women with symptoms of pelvic floor weakness: assessment with MR imaging. Radiology 1997; 203:77-81. Thirty women, 10 with constipation, 10 with faecal incontinence, and 10 asymptomatic volunteers underwent MRI at rest and during straining. MRI demonstrated global pelvic floor weakness in patients with constipation with multiple sites of prolapse. In contrast, the weakness is frequently posterior in faecally incontinent patients.

Magnetic resonance imaging of the pelvic floor in patients with obstructed defaecation

Healy JC, Halligan S, Reznek RH, Watson S, Bartram CI, Kamm MA, et al. Magnetic resonance imaging of the pelvic floor in patients with obstructed defaecation. Br J Surg 1997; 84:1555-1558. Eleven women with obstructed defaecation, in whom evacuation proctography and anorectal physiology were normal, were examined by dynamic MRI, which demonstrated marked visceral and levator muscle descent. Dynamic MRI should be considered if conventional examinations are normal.

Dynamic MR colpocystorectography assessing pelvic-floor descent
-
Lienemann A, Anthuber C, Baron A, Kohz P, Reiser M. Dynamic MR colpocystorectography assessing pelvic-floor descent. Eur Radiol 1997; 7:1309-1317. Forty-four female patients and five volunteers underwent magnetic resonance colpocystorectography (MR-CCRG) and dynamic fluoroscopy at rest, during pelvic floor contraction and straining. When compared to clinical and operative findings, MR-CCRG was more accurate than dynamic fluoroscopy in defining pelvic floor prolapse. It also demonstrated dynamically how dominant organ prolapse can conceal other sites of pelvic floor weakness.

Dynamic MR imaging compared with evacuation proctography when evaluating anorectal configuration and pelvic floor movement. AJR Am J Roentgenol 1997; 169:775-779.
