Wadsworth, W. S.; Emmons, W. D. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1961, 83, 1733. Unactivated dienophiles have also been obtained in good yields, by reaction with alkyltriphenylphosphonium salts, according to the Wittig reaction. The reaction yields were lower in the following cyclization step.

It is advantageous to strip off the hexanes from BuLi, and to use an excess of LICKOR in order to increase the strength of the reagent, as the metalation takes place at an allylic methylene group. For analogous elimination promoted by metalation at a methylene group see for example: Mordini, A.; Ben Rayana, E.; Margot, C., Schlosser, M. Tetrahedron 1990, 46, 2410.
