6. This fungal isolate, our strain # CNC-688 was identified by Dr. David Porter, Department of Botany, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia.
7. Fungal strain CNC-688 (an Aspergillus sp.) was isolated from a small sample of rotting Sargassum sp. that was inoculated onto the growth medium YPG agar medium (yeast extract 0.5%, peptone 0.5%, glucose 1%, crab meal 0.2%, seawater 100%, agar 1.6%, 0.025% penicillin G/ streptomycin sulfate (W/L)). The strain was removed from the isolation plate with a sterile loop and obtained in pure culture following successive transfers on YPG. For large scale production, (20 L), strain CNC-688 was grown using YPG medium without agar. After 12 days of static culture, the mycelium was filtered and extracted with EtOAc to obtain a crude extract containing 1. Mactanamide was not exuded into the culture medium.
