Material published by the Bank of Korea (1995) includes more up-to-date data. However, it uses a less disaggregated classification for the size of investment. Therefore, only data up to 1990 are used for table 4.

Total amount invested in capital-intensive sectors in Asia is greater than that in labor-intensive sectors in absolute amounts; however, compared to North America, investment in Asia is relatively more oriented toward labor-intensive sectors.

It was suggested that the regressions should include measures of wage inflation on the right-hand side. Because of the extremely high correlation between wage and per capita GNP variables, per capita GNP must be excluded. Regression including wage level instead of per capita GNP provided remarkably similar results.

As figs. 1 and 2 show, some degrees of comovement between selected labor dispute measures and DFI are found even after 1987. It would be very helpful if regression is conducted with lagged variables to find accumulated lagged effects of Korea's explosive labor disputes since 1987. This analysis can be done when more observations are collected.

note
-
As shown in table 1, China was an insignificant destination of Korea's DFI until 1991. A notable increase of Korea's DFI in China since 1992 was considered in a test, which did not produce any significant effect and was therefore excluded. Another discrete increase of DFI in China took place in 1994, which explained about 40% of Korea's total DFI in the world. The reasoning behind this is too premature to be discussed at this stage.

-
All the variables used in this study are contemporaneous data. The investment figures used in this article represent the amount of investment and the number of projects actually invested in rather than approved. After the approval, investors are able to invest in foreign countries without delay whenever they want to. For this reason, I used contemporaneous rather than lagged variables. Alternatively, since there may be a time lag even after the approval, I also conducted analyses with lagged variables. They did not provide implicative results.
