    • Man-made causes of air pollution synergistically interacted with the city's geographic setting to make matters worse. Mexico City is naturally subject to higher dust and suspended particle concentration due to the erosion of the ancient system of lake beds on which the city rests. Its location within a valley also results in weak wind patterns which cause an insufficient dispersion of air contaminants. This valley location also predisposes the city to thermal inversions whereby the lower layer of warm air (where contaminants are most heavily concentrated) fails to rise or disperse in the upper atmosphere and remains trapped over the city. In addition, the city's high altitude (2,240 metres above sea level) is associated with greater amounts of ultraviolet radiation which enhance the conversion of primary air pollutants into secondary pollutants such as ozone. Furthermore, motor vehicles function less efficiently and produce greater amounts of polluting carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons due to the city's high altitude-see in Leff, E.E. (1990) (editor), Medio Ambiente y Desarrollo en México Vol.2, Centro de Investigaciones Interdisciplinarias en Human-idades-UNAM, Mexico City
