Microtopography of the autonomic nerves in the rat knee: A fluorescence microscopic study
-
Schwab W, Bilgiçyildirim A, Funk RHW: Microtopography of the autonomic nerves in the rat knee: a fluorescence microscopic study. Anat Rec 1997, 247:109-118. The authors found evidence of CGRP- and NKA-ergic fibers in the outer layer of hyaline cartilage of rat knee joints and found that substance P, NKA, and CGRP immunoreactivity is enhanced after intra-knee injection to induce inflammation.

Dorsal root reflexes in articular afferents occur bilaterally in a chronic model of arthritis in rats

Rees H, Sluka KA, Lu Y, Westlund KN, Willis WD: Dorsal root reflexes in articular afferents occur bilaterally in a chronic model of arthritis in rats. J Neurophysiol 1997, 76:4190-4193. The "mirror inflammation" in the contralateral knee of rats that receive a unilateral intra-knee injection of incomplete Freund's adjuvant is apparently caused by the release of neuropeptides from small afferent fibers.
