1. Ledebo I. Principles and practice of hemofiltration and hemodiafiltration: Artificial Organs 1998; 22:20-25. This paper is an excellent overview of hemofiltration and hemodiafiltration techniques. Discussion of convective versus diffusive clearance and modes of substitution fluids are included. The author provides clinical results to support her discussion.
2. Pizzarelli F, Cerrai T, Dattolo P, Tetta C, Maggiore Q. Convective treatments with on-line production of replacement fluid: a clinical experience lasting 6 years. Nephrol Dial Transplant 1998; 13:363-369. This paper discusses the authors' clinical experience using on-line hemodiafiltration. No pyrogenic reatons were experienced in 4284 on-line treatments.
3. Mishkin GJ, Mishkin MA, Barlee V, Bosch JP. Assessment of the quality of on-line prepared substitution fluid for hemodiafiltration (HDF) [abstract]. J Am Soc Neph 1997; 8:166A-167A. This abstract presents the results of an intensive study to assess the quality of on-line produced substitution fluid for hemodiafiltration. The final substitution fluid consistently had endotoxin levels less than 0.03 EU/ml and no water-borne colony forming units.

Nephrol Dial Transplant 1997; 12:528-534. This paper discusses the use of a charcoal filter to remove creatinine, uric acid and B2 microglobulin from spent dialysate, then reinfusing of the filtered dialysate fluid to enhance molecule removal.

Blood Purif 1997; 15:169-181. This paper compares ultrapure highflux dialysis with on-line predilution hemofiltration on treatment tolerance and well-being. The authors find that hemofiltration will provide improved clinical tolerance and adequate nutritional status despite a lower delivered Kt/V.

11. vd Meer AM, ter Wee PM, Donker AJM, van Dorp WT. Dialysis efficacy during acetate free biofiltration. Nephrol Dial Transplant 1998; 13:370-374. The authors used an acetate-free bicarbonate solution for post-dilution biofiltration. Acidosis was better controlled using the biofiltration when compared to hemodialysis using 5 mmol/l acetate.
