The effect of aggressive lowering of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and low-dose anticoagulation on obstructive changes in saphenous-vein coronary-artery bypass grafts

Post Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Trial Investigators: The effect of aggressive lowering of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and low-dose anticoagulation on obstructive changes in saphenous-vein coronary-artery bypass grafts. N Engl J Med 1997, 336:153-162. This two-by-two randomized controlled trial demonstrated that aggressive cholesterol reduction (LDL < 100) reduced by almost 30% the progression of atherosclerosis and the need for revascularization procedures among patients who had undergone CABG. Low-dose warfarin (Coumadin) anticoagulation did not provide any detectable clinical benefit in this study of 1351 patients with average follow-up of 4.3 years.
