After we completed the research work for this paper, a similar methodology for the synthesis of carbocyclic beta-L- and beta-D-2-[5-(9H-purin-9-yl)-2-cyclopent-l-yl]ethanol was recently reported in literature. L. B. Akella and R. Vince, Tetrahedron, 52, 8407 (1996). However, the reported work differs from ours by the configuration, the heterocyclic moiety and the carbocyclic ring of the carbocyclic nucleosides obtained.
