1. Aaronson IA, Cakmak MA, Key LL. Defects of the testosterone biosynthetic pathway in boys with hypospadias. J Urol 1997; 157:1884-1888. The hypothesis that hypospadias is the result of fetal endocrinopathy is supported by measurements of serum concentration of steroids in 30 patients.
2. Kirsch AJ, Duckett JW, Synder HM, Canning DA, Harshaw DW, Howard P, et al. Skin flap closure by dermal laser soldering: a wound healing model for sutureless hypospadias repair. Urology 1997; 50:263-271. This is a very interesting study about laser tissue soldering in a rat skin flap model. Thinner scars and no suture tracks were observed 3 weeks after surgery. The authors suggested that it could improve cosmetic results and decrease complication rates in hypospadias repair.

4. Caione P, Capozza N, Lais A, Ferro F, Matarazzo E, Nappo S. Long-term results of distal urethral advancement glanuloplasty for distal hypospadias. J Urol 1997; 158:1168-1171. Over 4 years of outcomes after distal urethral advancement glanuloplasty procedures are presented. In a group of 118 patients, all had normal-appearing glans with the meatus correctly positioned at the top of the glans, and straight penis. Evaluation after puberty revealed normal sexual activity, but some patients had complained about the relatively short circumcised penis.
5. Warwick RT, Parkhouse H, Chappie CR. Bulbar elongation anastomosis meatoplasty (BEAM) for subterminal and urethroplasty. J Urol 1997; 158:1160-1167. This paper presents an interesting possibility for hypospadias repair, with technique description and excellent scheme. Mobilization of anterior and bulbar urethra with anastomotic meatoplasty allows very good outcomes with low risk of complications. It is particularly appropriate for circumcised patients or for those who want to save the foreskin. The authors suggest that preliminary urethroscopy is important to verify a normal urethra proximal to the hypospadiac urethral defect.
6. Wiener JS, Sutherland RW, Roth DR, Gonzales ET Jr. Comparison of onlay and tubularized island flaps of inner reputial skin for the repair of proximal hypospadias. J Urol 1997; 158:1172-1174. Comparison of results of onlay and tubularized island flap techniques performed by a single surgeon showed that onlay flap offers better outcomes in terms of fistula size and diverticular formation.
7. Kocvara R, Dvoracek J. Inlay-onlay flap uretheroplasty for hypospadias and urethral stricture repair. J Urol 1997; 158:2142-2145. This paper presents an interesting modification of inlay-onlay flap urethroplasty for primary and secondary repair, especially when partial urethral plate deficiency occurs.
8. Zaontz MR, Packer MG. Abnormalities of the external genitalia. Pediatr Clin North Am 1997; 44:1267-1297. This is a brief and clear report about aetiology, embryology, anatomy and surgical strategy in congenital malformations of external genitalia.
9. Rickwood AMK, Fearne C. Pedicled penile skin for hypospadias 'rescue'. Br J Urol 1997; 80:145-146. An example of pedicled penile skin flap used for hypospadias reoperation in cases in which the foreskin is damaged is presented.
10. Steckler RE, Zaontz MR, Stent-free Thiersch-Duplay hypospadias repair with the Snodgrass modification. J Urol 1997; 158:1178-1180. This is another possibility for distal hypospadias repair without postoperative indwelling catheter. Thirty-three children were treated using this procedure, with no fistulas and meatal stenosis thereafter.

12. Baskin LS, Canning DA, Snyder HM III, Duckett JW Jr. Surgical repair of urethral circumcision injuries. J Urol 1997; 158:2269-2271. The authors reported subcoronal uretherocutaneous fistula and urethral deviation secondary to partial glans amputation during circumcision. The various methods of repair are under discussion.
13. Cilento BG Jr, Stock JA, Kaplan GW. Pantaloon spica cast: an effective method for postoperative immobilization after free graft hypospadias repair. J Urol 1997; 157:1882-1883. This dressing assures the conditions necessary for successful grafting, with decreased hospitalization.
14. Chhibber AK, Perkins FM, Rabinovitz R, Vogt W, Hulbert WC. Penile block timing for postoperative analgesia of hypospadias repair in children. J Urol 1997; 158:1156-1159. This careful study of pain control after hypospadias repair yielded the conclusion that penile block before and after operation gives the most comfortable conditions.
15. Sripathi V, Ahmed S, Sakati N, Al-Ashwal A. Gender reversal in 46XX congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Br J Urol 1997; 79:785-789. Surgical managements, included gonadectomy, salpingectomy with uterectomy and subtotal vaginectomy, as well as hypospadias repair, were performed in six girls born with congenital virilizing adrenal hyperplasia. It is a pity when sex reversal is necessary because of delayed diagnosis or parental pressure.
16. Frank JD. Gender reversal in 46XX congenital virilizing adrenal hyperplasia [editorial comment]. Br J Urol 1997; 79:789. An excellent comment is made, that the real results of sex reversal will be apparent after puberty, and especially in adult life.
17. Miller MAW, Grant DB. Severe hypospadias with genital ambiguity: adult outcome after staged hypospadias repair. Br J Urol 1997; 80:485-488. This paper presents long-term follow-up studies of 19 patients who had undergone a staged surgical correction for severe perineoscrotal hypospadias. Some difficulties with micturition and ejaculation were observed, although erectile function was usually adequate. Psychological or psychiatric disturbances were rare.
18. Hensle TW, Reiley EA. Vaginal replacement in children and young adults. J Urol 1998; 159:1035-1038. A surgical technique with large bowel segment used for vaginal replacement is presented. The authors concluded that sigmoid segment is preferable to small bowel because of longer mesentery and tension-free anastomosis, particularly in obese patients.

21. Mollard P. Basset T, Mure PY. Female epispadias. J Urol 1997; 158:1543-1546. Simplified cervicoplasty was performed, with the conclusion that female epispadias should be treated in a single-stage procedure with complete reconstruction of the bladder neck, urethra and external genitalia.
22. Ahmed S, Gough DCS. Reconstruction of the mons venereum using omentum in female patients with epispadias/extrophy. Br J Urol 1997; 79:987-988. This technique allows improvement of cosmetic results in exstrophy-epispadias complex repair, but unfortunately results in another scar on the abdomen.
