The predominance of beta (CC) chemokine transcripts in idiopathic inflammatory muscle diseases
-
Adams EM, Kirkley J, Eidelman G, Dohlman J, Plotz PH: The predominance of beta (CC) chemokine transcripts in idiopathic inflammatory muscle diseases. Proc Assoc Am Physicians 1997, 109:275-285. The presence of cytokine and chemokine transcripts in polymyositis and dermatomyositis is reported. MIP-1α was the chemokine most commonly expressed in 13 of 14 cases of polymyositis and dermatomyositis. There was no difference in cytokine or chemokine pattern between polymyositis and dermatomyositis.

Cytokine production in muscle tissue of patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies
-
Lundberg I, Ulfgren AK, Nyberg P, Andersson U, Klareskog L: Cytokine production in muscle tissue of patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. Arthritis Rheum 1997, 40:865-874. No difference in cytokine expression pattern between polymyositis, IBM, and dermatomyositis was detected. Predominant interleukin-1α and TGF-β expression in the blood vessels was seen. Authors concluded that there might be an importance for the endothelial cells in the inflammatory process.

Transforming growth factor-beta 1 in polymyositis and dermatomyositis correlates with fibrosis but not with mononuclear cell infiltrate

This report suggests a correlation between TGF-β1 and connective tissue proliferation in inflammatory myopathy; the authors speculate that the increase of TGF-β1 may be linked to the ischemic muscle damage.

Cytokines block the effects of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) on glucose uptake and lactate production in skeletal muscle but do not influence IGF-I-induced changes in protein turnover
-
Fang CH, Li BG, James JH, Fischer JE, Hasselgren PO: Cytokines block the effects of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) on glucose uptake and lactate production in skeletal muscle but do not influence IGF-I-induced changes in protein turnover. Shock 1997, 8:362-367. The present paper tests the hypothesis that proinflammatory cytokines counteract the anabolic effects of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) in muscle tissue.

Acta Neuropathol 1997, 94:272-279. The authors conclude that interleukin-1 expressed by muscle fibers in pathological conditions seems to be associated with myofibrillar protein breakdown and regeneration.

Effects of corticosteroid treatment on IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta expression in muscle tissue in patients with inflammatory myopathies
-
Lundberg I: Effects of corticosteroid treatment on IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta expression in muscle tissue in patients with inflammatory myopathies [abstract]. Arthritis Rheum 1997, 40:180. Interleukin-1α was found in the endothelial cells during corticosteroid treatment, although the inflammatory infiltrates were abolished.
