    • The pathogenesis of orbital complications in acute sinusitis
    • Healy GB: The pathogenesis of orbital complications in acute sinusitis. Laryngoscope 1997, 107:441-446. Reports the advancements in the understanding of the pathogenesis and treatment of the orbital complications of sinus disease since Chandler's classic article published in 1970. The article emphasizes the role of ethmoid sinusitis in the development of orbital cellulitis. The most common pathogens identified in acute suppurative sinusitis have not changed, but Branhamella catarrhalis has become more common especially in children. The author warns against treating these infections in the ambulatory setting.

    • Barone SR, Aiuto LT: Periorbital and orbital cellulitis in the Haemophilus influenzae vaccine era. J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus 1997, 34:293-296. The authors point out the changing bacteriology of periorbital and orbital infections in the era of vaccination. This report confirms that vaccination does limit potentially serious infections.

    • Deshazo RD, Chapin K, Swain RE: Current concepts: fungal sinusitis. N Engl J Med 1997, 337:1491-1494. This article provides an excellent overview of fungal sinusitis as well as the potentially life-threatening complications. The article describes the risk factors in patients who develop fungal sinusitis and subsequent orbital invasion. The authors point out the need for aggressive management of these potentially life-threatening infections.

    • Current status in the treatment of orbital myositis
    • Mombaerts I, Koornneef L: Current status in the treatment of orbital myositis. Ophthalmology 1997, 104:402-408. The authors describe the clinical characteristics of orbital myositis along with the outcomes of corticosteroid and radiation therapy. Significant findings include a 50% recurrence rate as well as failure of 20 Gy of radiotherapy to prevent recurrence. The authors also distinguish the clinical characteristics of orbital myositis and diffuse idiopathic orbital inflammation.

    • Perry SR, Rootman J, White VA: The clinical and pathologic constellation of Wegener granulomatosis ot the orbit. Ophthalmology 1997, 104:683-694. Describes in detail the clinical findings in patients with Wegener granulomatosis affecting the orbit. Orbital Wegener granulomatosis can be identified by a constellation of clinical and radiographic findings. Prompt recognition of this condition is required to initiate potentially life-saving therapy.
