This study is an informative one, demonstrating that past psychiatric history, early maladjustment to cancer, poor social support, and low performance status were predictors of depressive symptoms in 113 patients with cancer.

This paper reports an interesting study involving 238 female patients with diagnosed stage I and stage II breast cancer. A very strong relationship was found between intrusion and psychologic distress.

This article reports an interesting investigation suggesting that anticipatory nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy are examples of conditioned responses elicited by the contextual cues of the treatment clinic.

20. Montgomery GH, Bovbjerg DH. The development of anticipatory nausea in patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer. Physiol Behav 1997; 61:737-741. This article further supports the importance of conditioning principles for understanding chemotherapy side effects in the treatment of cancer. As a conditioned phenomenon, such side effects may be managed by psychosocial interventions in addition to pharmacotherapy.
21. Andersen BL, Farrar WB, Golden-Kreutz D, Kutz LA, MacCallum R, Courtney ME, et al. Stress and immune responses after surgical treatment for regional breast cancer. J Natl Cancer Inst 1998; 90:30-36. This investigation is an excellent example of research that links stress with compromised immune function. Specifically, the physiologic effects of stress inhibited cellular immune responses that are relevant to cancer prognosis, namely natural killer cell toxicity and T-cell responses.

24. Sawyer M, Antoniou G, Toogood I, Rice M. Childhood cancer: a two-year prospective study of the psychological adjustment of children and parents. J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry 1997; 36:1736-1743. This prospective study follows the psychologic adjustment of young children, parents, and families during the 2 years after diagnosis. It suggests that families affected by cancer experience more distress immediately after diagnosis, but that this distress declines and stabilizes over the first year.

Sibling adaptation to childhood cancer collaborative study: the association of sibling adaptation with maternal well-being, physical health, and resource use. Dev Behav Pediatr 1997; 18:233-243. This study is informative regarding factors that are associated with behavioral/emotional adaptation in siblings of children with cancer.

J Pediatr Psychol 1997; 22:843-859. This article reports on an excellent study involving 309 survivors of childhood cancer and their parents. Results indicated that parents showed significantly higher levels of post-traumatic stress symptoms than comparison parents.

28. Roberts CS, Piper L, Denny J, Cuddeback G. A support group intervention to facilitate young adults' adjustment to cancer. Health Soc Work 1997; 22:133-141. This investigation is helpful in that it specifically addresses the unique concerns of young adults with cancer. Such concerns include anxiety about health and physical well-being, worry about fertility and child rearing, problems in relationships, financial concerns, and body image.
29. Coward DD. Facilitation of self-transcendence in a breast cancer support group. Oncol Nurs Forum 1998; 25:75-84. This provocative article suggests that the factor responsible for positive change in cancer support group participants may be self-transcendence.
30. Davison BJ, Degner LF. Empowerment of men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer. Cancer Nurs 1997; 20:187-196. This article suggests that older men with prostate cancer do want to be informed and participate in their own medical decisions.
31. Mansson A, Colleen S, Hermeren G, Johnson G. Which patients will benefit from psychosocial intervention after cystectomy for bladder cancer? Br J Urol 1997; 80:50-57. This study is interesting in that it investigates the influence of defensive strategies and philosophic outlook on intervention outcome.
32. Sivesind DM, Baile WF. An ovarian cancer support group. Cancer Pract 1997; 5:247-251. This report identifies existential issues as the most important therapeutic factor in a support group for patients with ovarian cancer.
33. Straker N. Psychodynamic psychotherapy for cancer patients. J Psychother Pract Res 1998; 7:1-9. This article proposes that psychodynamic psychotherapy is a useful approach to understanding and treating the psychological conflicts and psychiatric symptoms of cancer patients.
34. Iacovino V, Reesor K. Literature on interventions to address cancer patients' psychosocial needs: what does it tell us? J Psychosoc Oncol 1997; 15:47-71. This excellent article describes the practical benefits of 33 studies evaluating the effects of psychosocial interventions on patients' adjustment to cancer. It is quite thorough, dividing the interventions into methodologic categories (i.e. descriptive studies, retrospective and quasi-experimental studies, and controlled clinical outcome trials) and describing the particulars and benefits of each.
35. de Wit R, van Dam F, Zandbelt L, van Buuren A, van der Heijden K, Leenhouts G, Loonstra S. A pain education program for chronic cancer patients: follow-up results from a randomized controlled trial. Pain 1997; 73:55-69. This program is impressive, providing individualized pain education to patients via verbal instruction, written material, audio cassette tape, and the use of a pain diary. It was shown to be effective for cancer patients experiencing chronic pain.
36. Francke AL, Garssen B, Luiken JB, de Schepper AME, Grypdonck M, Huijer Abu-Saad H. Effects of a nursing pain program on patient outcomes. Psychooncology 1997; 6:302-310. This study was interesting in that educating nurses about cancer pain management (including relaxation and distraction) resulted in lower pain intensity in surgical colon and breast cancer patients.
37. Spiegel D, Moore R. Imagery and hypnosis in the treatment of cancer patients. Oncology 1997; 11:1179-1189. This article warrants further investigation into the interaction between mind and body in coping with cancer.
38. Arakawa S. Relaxation to reduce nausea, vomiting, and anxiety induced by chemotherapy in Japanese patients. Cancer Nurs 1997; 20:342-349. This study further verifies the efficacy of progressive muscle relaxation to treat anticipatory nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy.
39. Van der Pompe G, Duivenvoorden HJ, Antoni MH, Visser A, Heijnen CJ. Effectiveness of a short-term group psychotherapy program on endocnne and immune function in breast cancer patients: an exploratory study. J Psychosom Res 1997; 42:453-466. This study reported that only those patients with high endocrine and immune baseline levels showed improvement in immune functioning after experiential-existential group psychotherapy. Results suggest that the patient's profile with respect to endocrine and immune function at baseline can have an important effect on intervention outcome.

This study suggests that relaxation training in patients with cancer can positively affect immune parameters, even during myelosuppressive therapy.
