Interferon gamma-1b compared with placebo in metastatic renal cell carcinoma. N Engl J Med 1998; 38(18):1265-1271. A randomized placebo-controlled study evaluating interferon γ-1b. The placebo group had a higher response rate than the interferon γ-1b group (6% versus 4%). No difference in outcome was noted between the two groups. These "negative" results emphasize the necessity of randomized controlled studies in the evaluation of systemic therapy for RCC.
