Ischaemic stroke and combined oral contraceptives: results of an international, multicentre, case-control study. Lancet 1996; 348:498-505. A large hospital based case control study in 21 centres. The results are separated by European and developing countries. The study found overall increased odds ratios for current use of oral contraceptives. There was insufficient power to assess risks of different generations of oral contraceptive.

Case-control study of oral contraceptives and risk of thromboembolic stroke: results form international study on oral contraceptives and health of young women. BMJ 1997; 315:1502-1504. A large case-control study of ischaemic stroke. The study found increased risk of ischaemic stroke for current users of oral contraceptives and no difference in risk ratio for second versus third generation pills. The latter had confidence intervals which included 1 (0.7-2.0).
