    • The effect of optic disc size on diagnostic precision with the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph
    • Iester M, Mikelberg FS, Drance SM: The effect of optic disc size on diagnostic precision with the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph. Ophthalmology 1997, 104:545-548. The authors used the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT) to separate normal subjects from glaucoma patients. They found that the best separation is achieved if a combination of the parameters cup shape measure, height variation in contour, and rim volume is applied. With this parameter combination, a 74% sensitivity and 88% specificity in predicting visual field defects is obtained. It is now used in the printout of the 2.01 version of the HRT to classify a disc either as normal or as glaucomatous.

The authors introduced the concept of "normalized" cup/disc ratios. Those normalized cup/disc ratios can be used to calculate a ranked segment analysis of each individual disc. The ranked segment analysis is a similar plot as the well-known cumulative defect curve (Bebie curve) in automated perimetry. It can be very helpful in separating normal subjects from glaucoma patients and it is now a printout option of the HRT.

    • Optic disc hemorrhages and progression of glaucoma
    • Siegner SW, Netland PA: Optic disc hemorrhages and progression of glaucoma. Ophthalmology 1996, 103:1014-1024. The authors screened as many as 33,660 optic disc photographs to study some features of optic disc hemorrhages. In addition, they found that 63% of patients had progressive visual field loss and 79% had progressive disc damage after the hemorrhage (despite medical therapy). This shows that conventional fundus photography is still useful not only in clinical practice but also in scientific studies.
