    • Dell'Osso LF, Averbuch-Heller L, Leigh RJ: Oscillopsia suppression and foveation-period variation in congenital, latent and acquired nystagmus. Neuro-ophthalmology 1997, 18:163-183. The authors analyze the quality of foveation in several nystagmus forms. Oscillopsia occurred irrespective of well-developed foveation. The absence of well-developed foveation did not result in oscillopsia. These findings argue against the role of foveation periods in suppression of oscillopsia and more in support of the hypothesis that an efference copy signal of the nystagmus waveform is used to cancel the effects of the motion induced by the congenital nystagmus.

This article addressed the diagnosis and treatment of periodic alternating nystagmus. Large recessions of all four horizontal rectus muscles improved abnormal head position and visual acuities and caused favorable changes in foveation fraction in all patients.

    • Infantile nystagmus development documented by eye movement recordings
    • Gottlob I: Infantile nystagmus development documented by eye movement recordings. Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci 1997, 38:767-773. In a subject with infantile (congenital) idiopathic nystagmus consecutive eye-movement recordings showed that no nystagmus was present at 5 weeks, square-wave jerks were recorded at 7 weeks, and pendular and jerk-type nystagmus was observed after the age of 8 weeks. This study confirmed earlier clinical observations that the onset of idiopathic nystagmus is not at birth. In analogy to the "infantile" squint syndrome it would be correct to rename the idiopathic "congenital" nystagmus idiopathic infantile nystagmus.
