Incorporation of cognitive-behavioral treatment into the medical care of chronic low back pain patients: a controlled randomized study in German pain treatment centers. Patient Educ Couns 1997; 31:113-124. This study demonstrates the additive efficacy of cognitive-behavioral intervention to conventional medical intervention for reducing pain and disability in chronic low back pain. Patient attrition was taken into account by using intention-to-treat analyses.

This study demonstrates that a critical factor in determining the efficacy of rehabilitation programs for disabled chronic low-back pain patients is to modify patients' subjective beliefs of their ability to return to work; demographic and medical backgrounds did not predict clinical outcome.

Chronic low back pain rehabilitation programs: a study of the optimum duration of treatment and a comparison of group and individual therapy. Spine 1997; 22:2246-2251. This study compared two parameters of cognitive-behavioral, multidisciplinary pain programs: first, individual therapy versus group therapy and second, the length of the group therapy sessions (15 hours, 30 hours and 60 hours). No differences were found between individual and group therapy or among group therapies of various durations.

This study demonstrates the efficacy of behavioral interventions to patient education intervention in reducing pain and disability associated with FMS. The findings also suggest that reducing a sense of helplessness is critical in symptomatic improvement.
