Breast cancer and hormone replacement therapy: Collaborative reanalysis of data from 51 epidemiological studies of 52,705 women with breast cancer and 108,411 women without breast cancer
-
Collaborative Group on Hormonal Factors in Breast Cancer: Breast cancer and hormone replacement therapy: collaborative reanalysis of data from 51 epidemiological studies of 52,705 women with breast cancer and 108,411 women without breast cancer. Lancet 1997, 350:1047-1059. Most of the worldwide data concerning the association between hormone replacement therapy and breast cancer was pooled, enabling careful consideration of the timing and duration of the exposure in relation to disease onset. The results indicated that current users were at increased risk of breast cancer, and that the risk increased with duration of use. After stopping use, the risk of breast cancer decreased back to baseline levels after 5 years.

Postmenopausal hormone therapy and mortality
-
Grodstein F, Stampfer MJ, Colditz GA, Willett WC, Manson JE, Joffe M, et al.: Postmenopausal hormone therapy and mortality. N Engl J Med 1997, 336:1769-1775. Using data from a longitudinal follow-up of nurses, this study was designed to evaluate the association between hormone replacement therapy and mortality while accounting for the fact that women who take hormone replacement therapy may be healthier than women who do not. Overall mortality was lower among hormone users than non-users, but the benefit was attenuated among long-term users due to an increased risk of breast cancer.
