    • Nosé W, Neves RA, Burris TE, Schanzlin DJ, Belfort R Jr: Intrastromal Corneal Ring: 12-month sighted myopic eyes. J Refract Surg 1996, 12:20-28. The first 10 human sighted eyes to receive the ICR (procedures performed in Sao Paulo, Brazil) obtained 20/40 or better vision 1 day after surgery. The device was explanted at month 6 in one patient. This study demonstrated that a single-thickness 0.30-mm ICR can correct approximately 1.5 to 3 D of myopia and maintains BSCVA in all patients.

    • Schanzlin DJ, Asbell PA, Burris TE, Durrie DS: The ICRS: phase II results for the correction of myopia. Ophthalmology 1997, 104:1067-1078. Preliminary report for four of the six phase II sites, testing five ICRS thicknesses: 0.25, 0.30, 0.35, 0.40, and 0.45 mm. This FDA-regulated trial demonstrated that 95 of 99 patients had a UCVA of 20/40 or better. Ninety-nine percent were within two lines of their preoperative BSCVA. Two eyes were explanted and in both patients manifest refraction returned to within 0.75 D of preoperative values. Corneal topography confirmed maintenance of prolate asphericity for all five ICRS thicknesses. Contrast sensitivity results were within normal limits.
