    • note
    • The improvement consists of locating the surface ionization detector in a separately pumped chamber and collecting the ions with an electron multiplier. This results in lower background and increased sensitivity for LIBD measurements; it also allows simultaneous collection of LIF and LIBD spectra, since the light emitted by the surface ionization detector hot wire does not affect the photomultiplier. This configuration has been adopted both at Princeton and in a new apparatus built by Frank Stienkemeier in Bielefeld, giving identical results.
