Human cytotrophoblasts adopt a vascular phenotype as they differentiate. A strategy for successful endovascular invasion?
-
of outstanding interest. This first paper documents the comprehensive nature of the switch from an epithelial to an endothelial adhesion receptor phenotype normally exhibited by invasive cytotrophoblasts. The second paper (see [31]) illustrates the functional significance of this switch by showing that it does not occur in pregnancies complicated by pre-eclampsia.

Differential localization of VE- And N cadherins in human endothelial cells: VE-cadherin competes with N-cadherin for junctional localization

of outstanding interest. This paper elegantly illustrates, at the cellular and molecular level, that VE-cadherin can successfully compete out another cadherin (N-cadherin) at cell - cell adhesion sites. A similar process may occur when VE-cadherin is upregulated in invasive cytotrophoblasts that already express E-cadherin.
