Thus, the authors question the clinical significance of enthesitis, traditionally regarded as a pathologic hallmark of spondyloarthropathy.

Br J Rheumatol 1997, 36:677-682. Seventy percent of 26 patients with AS had pulmonal abnormalities when examined by high resolution CT. Interestingly, four patients had ILD, a disease complication not previously noted in AS. Plain radiographs failed to detect such abnormalities.

Moreover, distribution of B27 subtypes could not explain the rarity of the disease. The authors suggested the presence of some non-B27 protective factor reducing the prevalence of AS.

Twenty-four patients with AS who had 43 Charnley low-friction hip arthroplasties were evaluated after a mean of 22.7 years. The overwhelming majority was free of pain, and none had clinically important heterotopic ossification. The results are promising, and contrary to earlier reports on hip surgery in AS, postoperative soft tissue ossification appear to represent only a minor problem.
