This study refutes the postulated local anesthetic mechanism of action of intrathecal sufentanil and explains its analgesic properties solely on the basis of its opiate receptor agonist properties.

This paper demonstrates that the mechanism of action of intrathecal sufentanil is derived from activity at both the spinal and supraspinal level, and the separation of beneficial analgesia from unwanted side-effects may be very difficult.
