8. General procedure: 1.0 eqv. of the oxalamide dicarboxylic acid, 0.3 eqv. DMAP, and 3.0 eqv. Of 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) 3-ethyl carbodimide hydrochloride were stirred in dry DMF under nitrogen for 15 minutes. 3.0 eqv of 2-(hydroxymethyl) 1,3-butadiene are syringed into the reaction mixture. After stirring at ambient temperature overnight water was added and the product extracted into ethylacetate. The crystalline product never melts, but decomposes above 170 °C.
9. w = .084 for 249 independent reflections. Data refinement was carried out using an isotropic model for all nonhydrogen atoms.
