19. The membranes are bound by attractive interactions (e.g., van der Waals attraction), or by external pressure. Binding between a pair of membranes is equivalent to that of a single membrane to a wall.

Although the effects of fluctuations on the direct short-range repulsion between membranes are strong, it is not clear that the Helfrich interaction can be used as a local interaction in all cases.
