In quantum wells and wires the exciton binding energy is the difference in energy between an interacting electron-hole pair state and the corresponding electron-hole continuum. For the quantum dots the binding energy is taken to be the difference between the interacting electron-hole pair state energy and the energies of the corresponding single-particle states.

This approach was found to give good values for the exciton binding energy in ref. [18], where the results were compared both with the results of two-photon absorption experiments and also with detailed calculations for the quantum wire of a single size.

note
-
Exciton binding energies have been found to be relatively insensitive to the effects of alloy disorder as was shown in ref. [27]. This is presumably due to alloy potential fluctuations occurring on scales smaller than the exciton Bohr radius. It might be noted that the systematic dependences found here for the exciton binding energies and the fact that they are in good agreement with calculations tend to confirm that the effects of alloy fluctuations on the binding energies are small.

The dielectric constant for the present material system was obtained by averaging low-temperature values for GaAs and InAs [29].
