    • We have been unable to detect curvature in the (MMA) va t plots at high conversion. This implies that the second step is not only fast, but this equilibrium favors the formation of 2-MMA in the presence of a large excess of PMMA. This may be due to a combination of steric and, perhaps more importantly, electronic effects as MMA can stabilize the positive charge on the metal more effectively (through delocalization) than a simple ester.
