    • When a fluid is nonNewtonian: if it shear-thickens, then m < 1; if it shear-thins, then m > 1. In the shear-thinning case, as m increases the parabolic shear rate profile characteristic of Poiseuille flow becomes broader and shallower. This has the effect of reducing the range of fluid velocities distributed across the flow channel, effectively making the shear rate profile more linear. Under these conditions the area average shear rate approximates to the velocity average shear rate.
