It is interesting to note that in 1975 The Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science states that "the vast majority of existing systems" fall into these categories: acquisitions, cataloging, serials, and circulation (p. 343). Hildreth, in Library Automation in North America, tells us that in 1980, the phrase "online public access catalog" was not a familiar one "in the common parlance of library networkers" (p. 5).
