    • note
    • The differences between the efficiency and utilization values for both dietary protein and energy are the efficiency values (PER and EER) being related only to the amount of nutrient consumed (g of protein or 100 kcal of ME) to produce a g of weight gain, whereas utilization values (PU and EU) represent the percentages of dietary protein or energy consumed which are retained as carcass nitrogen or energy. The utilization values for dietary protein and energy evaluate the diet based on maintenance requirements plus retention of specified nutrient. The efficiency values compare diets based only on producing weight and give no allowance for maintenance or carcass composition changes.

    • note
    • The data were analyzed as a split-plot design using a Statistix software program (Statistix, NH Analytical Software, Minneapolis, MN). ANOVAP-values are given for all main effects and interactions. Multiple mean comparisons were calculated by the method of least significant difference with significance set at the 5% level. Regression models were checked by the residual plots and the Mallows' Cp values. The three-dimensional graphs of smoothed response surface (SRS) using temperature and dietary CP as the two horizontal axes were created using the smoothing technique of SAS/GRAPH [46, 47].
