This study on monkeys used a brief period of free-fall in the dark to achieve a high translational acceleration and showed that the translational vestibuloocular reflex (TVOR) elicited compensatory eye movements at short latency (16-18 ms), with an amplitude that was inversely proportional to the viewing distance just before the fall.

    • A role for stereoscopic depth cues in the rapid visual stabilization of the eyes
    • Busettini C, Masson GS, Miles FA: A role for stereoscopic depth cues in the rapid visual stabilization of the eyes. Nature 1996, 380:342-345. The authors used a dichoptic viewing arrangement to present identical large-field moving patterns to each eye. When these binocular images were exactly aligned and then suddenly moved together, they elicited ocular-following responses at ultrashort latencies in both monkeys and humans. Misaligning the two patterns just as they started to move - so as to introduce a few degrees of binocular disparity - completely eliminated the very earliest tracking responses. It is suggested that these characteristics reflect the properties of direction-selective neurons in monkey visual cortex, which are also sensitive to binocular disparity. Some stereoanomalous subjects showed tracking deficits that were limited to one particular direction of motion over a very narrow range of depths. This finding suggested that these subjects lack just one type of cortical neuron, tuned-zero cells.

In Parietal Lobe Contributions to Orientation in 3D Space. Edited by Thier P, Karnath H-O. Heidelberg: Springer-Verlag; 1997:185-199. Reviews the evidence for the involvement of a cortico-pontine-cerebellar pathway originating in the medial superior temporal area (MST) in the generation of ocular-following at ultrashort latencies by sudden motion of the visual scene. Presents evidence that changes in the vergence angle of the two eyes might account for much of ocular-following's dependence on the inverse of the viewing distance [18]. Also reports that MST neurons discharging in relation to ocular-following show little sensitivity to vergence, which therefore probably originates mostly downstream or in yet-to-be-discovered alternative parallel pathways.
