Gonadectomy decreases, whereas androgen treatment restores, AR mRNA expression in both sexes.

The aromatase inhibitor fadrozole induces testicular development in genetic females (i.e. ovaries are also present). However, the song system of these females is not masculinized, despite evidence that their testicular tissue secretes androgens (i.e. their syrinx is enlarged). The authors suggest that either non-estrogen ovarian secretions block androgen action or a more direct genetic mechanism is responsible for masculinization.

Tobias ML, Viswanathan S, Kelley DB: Rapping, a female receptive call, initiates male/female duets in the South African clawed frog. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1998, in press. When about to oviposit, female frogs produce a new vocal behavior, rapping, that acts as an auditory aphrodisiac for males, evoking intense calling and attempted copulation. The ability to study songs in female Xenopus provides a new and potentially informative arena for relating cellular to behavioral sex differences.
