It should be noted that the airlines first introduced commercial jet aircraft in late 1958, but it was not until the early 1960s that this development had a substantial impact.

"Finney, Airport Executive, KTUC Radio dial 1400," Reel #84, Tucson Airport Files, Tucson City Archives; General Land Use Plan Tucson and Environs (Tucson: City-County Planning Department, 1960), 9, 12; Vince Davis, "Plan Initiated to Bring Business Here," Arizona Daily Star, May 14, 1953, 1,14; "XXV Anniversary Tucson Airport Authority," (1973), TAA folder, vertical clippings files, Tucson Public Library; "1948-1985 Tucson Airport Authority," (n.d., circa 1985), TAA folder, vertical clippings files, Tucson Public Library. Grand Central moved from Glendale, California, to Tucson in 1950 because it could more easily modify B-29s that had been stored since World War II at nearby Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. Most TAA members were businessmen. They were joined by some local professionals and members of the University of Arizona. The TAA's first president was Monte Mansfield, who served from 1948 through 1951. The outlook of these men was neatly summarized by Roy Drachman in 1953 when he said that Tucson did not want to attract heavy industry. Instead, "electronics, aircraft companies, . . . insurance companies - those are the types of new business we desire." (Quotation from Davis article.) For an additional discussion of the impact of military aviation on the economic and geographic structure of cities, see The Martial Metropolis: US Cities in War and Peace (New York: Praeger Publishers, 1984), edited by Roger Lotchin. One should especially consult Martin Schiesl's article on Los Angeles, Geoffrey Rossano's essay on Nassau County, and David Johnson's investigation of San Antonio.

Bradford Luckingham, "Phoenix: The Desert Metropolis," in Richard Bernard and Bradley Rice, eds., Sunbelt Cities: Politics and Growth Since World War II (Austin: University of Texas Press, 1983). Luckingham states that Phoenix grew very rapidly due to a combination of federal and local decisions that tied into the larger trends of World War II and the Cold War.
