Chattering cells: Superficial pyramidal neurons contributing to the generation of synchronous oscillations in the visual cortex
-
of outstanding interest. Intracellular in vivo recordings from cat striate cortex revealed a new pyramidal cell type in layer 2/3 that intrinsically generates bursts in the gamma frequency range (20-70 Hz), with intraburst frequencies up to 800 Hz. These cells exhibit the same type of response to a visual stimulus as to a steady current injection, suggesting that they are involved in generating the cortical oscillations observed in response to visual stimuli.

Influence of dendritic structure on firing pattern in model neocortical neurons

of special interest. The authors used a model based on reconstructed neurons to reproduce firing patterns in the cortex. Using the model, they were able to relate different dendritic branching patterns to distinct intrinsic firing patterns, thereby underlining the importance of anatomical structure for generating responses in a cell.

A rigorous proof of a theorem stating that a necessary condition (and sufficient in the limit of high connectivity) for locking is that the postsynaptic potential of a cell increases in time as the cell fires, allowing for a simple geometrical method to analyze the role of delays, excitatory and inhibitory interactions, as well as refractoriness, in a variety of models.

Stimulus-dependent synchronization of neural responses in the visual cortex of the awake macaque monkey
-
of special interest. Using two electrodes in the middle temporal area of awake behaving macaque monkeys, the authors recorded two spatially segregated cells with overlapping receptive fields that engaged in synchronous activity when stimulated with a single moving bar. Stimulation with two different bars, each moving in the direction preferred by the cell, reduced synchronous epochs significantly.

Synchronization of neurons during local field potential oscillations in sensorimotor cortex of awake monkey
-
of special interest. Units across wide regions can become synchronized specifically during local field potential oscillations, even if their spikes are uncorrelated during non-oscillatory periods. Synchronization did not occur preferentially for co-activated, task-related neurons, suggesting that synchronous oscillations may not play an obvious role in sensorimotor association or binding.
